I was looking through the blogs of some students taking the OCA illustration degree course and one of the projects asked to create something around a two word theme – “Seven Days” – no further guidance given. The expectation, I assume, is a narrative constructed across seven days – but I had the germ of an idea for something else – and then the QR code thing popped into my head and I simply had to try it out.
For some it may be immediately obvious what’s going on but for others, you may have to do as instructed…
I guess this is leaning more towards graphic design. I’m not telling a story. What am I doing? (question to me, not you). It’s a playful puzzle. It encourages the viewer to interact with it. Maybe that’s enough.
My process, divined through trial and error, was:
- generate a QR code for the URL
- use a free Adobe tool to convert the PNG to SVG
- insert the SVG into PowerPoint as a graphic
- convert the graphic to a set of shapes
- delete all the white shapes manually
- I’m then left with a set of black shapes that can be coloured, filled with a texture/picture (individually or as a group), placed on top of another image, etc.
