part 1: ex 3&4: contours

EX 3: I found this surprisingly difficult at first. I am obviously extremely rusty at this. My hand felt tense and the line just didn’t flow. Things improved slightly with repetition but drawing the outside contour and then the inner negative spaces just felt odd. Ordinarily I would draw the body of the mug first as a cylindrical shape and then add the handle.

EX 4: This was an interesting exercise. My hand was more relaxed and the lines flowed more freely. As can be seen I had particular difficulty landing the inner space of the handle in the “right” place a lot of the time. But seeing the three elements of the object (outline, two inner spaces) placed in various positions relative to each other gives me a deconstructed view of whats going on here. A useful technique to bear in mind.
