Trying here an exercise from Experimental Drawing by Robert Kaupelis. The direction is to: set up a still life; capture some horizontals, verticals and diagonals; apply tones to the resultant shapes in a random fashion – ignoring the still life itself; then return to the still life and bring out elements of the composition.
An interesting exercise – exploring sliding planes, fractured forms, closure, arbitrary tones, transparency. I haven’t gone for multiple view-points or any distortion of perspective. At some point I decided the bowl should be wider so added some repeats of the contour to the left and right.
I did subvert the process somewhat and sketched in the objects before tracking backward (my new friend sandpaper). I should try this again…
Exploring composition options:
Braque-ish?

Early Mondrian-ish?
