getting to know me (or at least my face)

Colin walks into a bar. The bartender asks “why the long face?” Colin replies “oh I’m fine – I’m just drawn that way”.

Freestyle from a selfie. It’s me (ish) alright but a very elongated face! (and not by design).

Another selfie. I took the positions of the eyes, nostril and mouth-line directly from the laptop screen to give myself a headstart – cheating? I think of it as portraiture with training wheels on – to give me some confidence.

Another from a selfie. I’m slowly building towards trying with a mirror. Work colleagues often accuse me of frowning on video-conference calls – I think it is just the natural set of my face.

Trying a different approach here – inspired by some techniques described in ‘Experimental Drawing’ by Robert Kaupelis. I blurred a selfie using an on-line editing tool and then gradually brought it back into “focus”.

Interesting result. Less like me and yet more me, at the same time.
