Lawrence of Arabia – David Lean – 1962
The classic introduction of Omar Sharif’s character. With my new-found ability to digitally cut-out drawn characters, I decided to create the backdrops for these cells from the film itself. I took a thin vertical slice from the shot where there wasn’t any foreground detail and then stretched it out horizontally. It works well. The use of cut-outs also allowed me to blur background characters/objects as appropriate.
There is a shot that begins with Tafas’s gun skittering to a halt at Peter O’Toole’s feet and then tilts up to his horrified face. I decided to do the whole thing as a single drawing and then indicate the tilting camera as shown.
The following long-shot includes Ali’s final approach, his dismount, his examination of Tafas’ body and his turn to address Lawrence. I decided to do do this as a single large cell with the character movement indicated within it.
