An exercise exploring negative space.

I couldn’t think of any existing sketch that would lend itself to the negative treatment but I did have a storm pic on my phone and have been wanting to do something with it for a while. I started with a dark ground and used the sea and sand in a negative space-ish way, to reveal the outlines of the figures and rocks. Much fun was had with a digital spatter-effect brush.
I’ve deliberately left the brushwork in the foreground quite crude to make the “workings” – how it is put together – more obvious.
The surf over-spilling the rudimentary border, although not entirely intentional, works well.
