a vision from hell

The ask was to storyboard some footage from a film or TV show.

Hand-drawn in pencil and manipulated in PowerPoint.

Raising Arizona – The Coen Brothers – 1987

The story so far:

Convenience store robber H.I. “Hi” McDunnough meets police officer Edwina (“Ed”) as she takes his mugshots before one of multiple sentences in prison. They marry and move into a desert mobile home, and Hi gets a job in a machine shop. They want to have children, but Ed is infertile and they cannot adopt due to Hi’s criminal record.

Hi and Ed learn of the quintuplet sons known as the “Arizona Quints” born to regionally famous furniture magnate Nathan Arizona. They kidnap one of the babies, whom they believe to be Nathan Jr. That night, Hi has an intense nightmare about a monstrous biker …

When I googled the script for this, I found a version that included scene descriptions and camera positions and movements, which I have included to the right of each cell. There were some variations between what was in the script and what ended up in the final edit (for instance in the script, the rabbit was dispatched with a shotgun and not a hand grenade) – so I had to tweak the descriptions to match. I did toy with the idea of producing a storyboard that illustrated the script and not the final film but … didn’t.

I did rather go to town in my use of Powerpoint’s Background Removal tool to split the original drawings into their component parts – adding colour here, blurring there – none of it strictly necessary but I did enjoy the process and it did result in a more visually interesting end product.

In the later frames, I used an on-line ‘zoom blur’ tool to indicate the rushing forward camera motion.
